EDUCATOR * PARENT * ADVOCATE
Sharon Nilsson is a Butte County educator, parent and community advocate who believes collaboration and respect, along with health and safety are vital to meet the diverse needs of the students in Oroville schools.
I support policy change and comprehensive training to address DOJ invstigation results identifying discrimination within Oroville City Elementary School District. Oroville students of color and students with disabilities deserve equal treatment and opportunities to succeed. We need to increase awareness of systemic barriers that disadvantage under-represented students. We need to encourage and support educators as they seek to adapt instructional and leadership practices to best meet the needs of all students. I support creating school culture that embraces and promotes equity for our diverse student population.
I believe in the power of effective communication and collaboration. I am eager to work on strengthening and re-building the relationships between the district and staff, parents, and our local community. I want to ensure that all voices are heard, respectfully considered, and acted upon to support high-quality education for all students.
During these unprecedented COVID-19 times, it is imperative that we ensure the health and safety of our staff and students while providing top-notch education via distance learning. We need to improve our information technology infrastructure to ensure all students have access to the technology needed to succeed while learning from home. We need to support teachers with high quality curriculum and processes to maximize learning remotely. And we need to create a comprehensive plan for when we do return to the classroom that maintains helath and safety guidelines for all staff and students.
As your school board member, I will work in partnership with parents, teachers, and administrators to support high-quality education to best meet the current needs of our students. We need a school board that respects teachers, staff and parents and works collaboratively with our community to make decisions about our schools.
As an experienced educator and teacher of future educators, I know what world-class education looks like and how to achieve it for our students. As a Butte County Office of Education employee and the spouse of an elementary teacher, I know first-hand what a stressful time this is for our dedicated teachers and school staff. And, as a parent and community member, I see opportunities for growth and unity-building within the district. We need knowledgeable and experienced school board members to lead our district forward through these challenging times. Together we can do this!
